For many years, pilots flying near thunderstorms reported seeing unusual flashes of light that seemed to shoot upward above storm clouds. These phenomena, known as red sprites among other types of transient luminous events, are colossal electrical discharges occurring high in the Earth's mesosphere. Scientific validation began after a 1989 accidental recording by a Minnesota university team, which prompted dedicated aircraft campaigns in the early 1990s to observe and document these luminous events from above the storms.

Subsequent research, including observations from NASA's space shuttles and the International Space Station, confirmed the existence of sprites and distinguished them from related phenomena such as blue jets and elves. These luminous events are triggered by lightning and are significant for understanding the electrical coupling between thunderstorms and the Earth's upper atmosphere. Recent photographic evidence from astronauts aboard the ISS has demonstrated the widespread and ongoing occurrence of these phenomena, providing valuable data for atmospheric and space sciences.

Scientists continue to study sprites systematically through space-based instruments like ESA's Thor experiment and the Atmosphere-Space Interaction Monitor—aiming to better understand their role in Earth's electrical system. Meanwhile, citizen science initiatives, including NASA's Spritacular project, actively involve the public and aviation community in capturing and analyzing sprite images, expanding the data pool and increasing awareness of these spectacular atmospheric events.

Despite being visible from aircraft and space, sprites are brief and require specific conditions—such as darkness and proximity to active thunderstorms—to be observed. Their discovery and ongoing study exemplify the crucial role of aviation and space technology in unveiling natural phenomena that were once dismissed or misunderstood.
