United Airlines is expanding its international network with new routes to Japan from its key US hubs. The airline announced the addition of nonstop flights from both Chicago and San Francisco to Sapporo, along with the reinstatement of daily year-round service between Chicago and Tokyo Narita. These route enhancements are part of United's strategy to become more globally connected and to meet increasing demand in the Japanese market.
During the winter season, United will operate up to 13 flights daily to four Japanese airports: Sapporo (CTS), Tokyo-Narita (NRT), Tokyo-Haneda (HND), and Osaka (KIX). The highlighted headline change is the Tokyo Narita service, which will run year-round from Chicago, providing improved access for business travelers and leisure tourists alike. The decision to serve Sapporo is based on internal market studies indicating demand for leisure trips to the region, even though it is a less crowded destination.
The airline emphasizes that these route additions will strengthen connectivity between the US and Japan, reducing multi-stop itineraries from the West Coast and Midwest. This expansion is also part of United's post-pandemic recovery efforts to maintain its competitive position in the international aviation market, supporting increased capacity and service offering to travelers seeking both business and leisure opportunities in Japan.
