United Airlines Flight Attendant Contract Offers Higher Pay and Changes Profit Sharing and Scheduling Systems

The newly negotiated contract for United Airlines flight attendants is anticipated to bring substantial improvements in compensation and benefits. Basic wages are set to increase by approximately 30%, alongside a sign-on bonus, boarding pay, and enhanced retirement benefits. The detailed agreement, spanning 425 pages, also addresses operational conditions such as hotel standards, rest periods, and scope restrictions related to regional airline ownership.

Once ratified, the contract will position United's flight attendants with the highest base wages in the airline industry. The retroactive pay structure includes a flat 4% increase from September 2021 to 2024, followed by a 22% boost in 2025. Despite these gains, profit-sharing remains less generous compared to competitors like Delta and American, as United's formula is based on a lower percentage of profits.

Changes in Scheduling and Scope

The agreement marks the end of United’s push for Industry-standard Preferential Bidding System (PBS) scheduling, which many crew members found complex and unpredictable. Management will continue to use traditional line bidding methods. Additionally, United now has the scope to own a regional airline without employing mainline flight attendants, a significant shift that aims to balance cost control with job protections.

While these developments are viewed positively by some, others express frustration over the delayed negotiations and modest overall compensation increases. Nonetheless, the union expects the contract to be approved, though ongoing labor tensions and the threat of strikes remain possible in future disputes.
