United Airlines is set to upgrade its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet starting April 22, 2026, with the introduction of a new premium configuration called the "Elevated" layout. The airline's first flight with these redesigned aircraft will connect San Francisco to Singapore, offering enhanced luxury and comfort for long-haul travelers.
At the heart of this upgrade are the new "United Polaris Studio" suites. These eight exclusive seats, positioned at the front of the cabin, provide approximately 25% more space than the standard Polaris seats. They also feature a privacy door, a 27-inch 4K OLED screen, and an ottoman for additional comfort. Passengers in these suites can enjoy gourmet dishes, including an amuse-bouche with Ossetra caviar, elevating the in-flight experience.
The rollout plan includes subsequent routes such as San Francisco to London Heathrow, beginning April 30, 2026. Before full international deployment, United plans to conduct test flights between San Francisco and Houston to familiarize crew and staff with the new cabin features. By late 2027, United aims to have at least 30 of these upgraded Dreamliners in service, increasing its capacity in the premium segment and catering to growing demand.
The new aircraft will feature a total of 99 premium seats distributed among United Polaris Studio, United Polaris, and United Premium Plus classes. Industry experts see this as a strategic move amid rising competition from Asian and Middle Eastern carriers. The aircraft’s technical systems have been overhauled for better ergonomics and entertainment, with significant hardware investment by United to attract business travelers and high-end leisure passengers.
This modernization forms part of United’s broader "United Next" program to fleet-wide technological upgrades and customer experience enhancements. While the Boeing 787-9 remains the backbone of ultra-long routes, the increased premium capacity aims to optimize revenue. The Polaris Studio Suites reflect evolving industry trends, blurring traditional class distinctions and offering finer market segmentation.
