United Airlines, in collaboration with SkyWest Airlines operating under the United Express brand, is undertaking a significant fleet modernization program aimed at enhancing passenger experience and operational efficiency. The partnership involves retrofitting approximately fifty CRJ200 regional jets into the new CRJ450 variant by 2030. The CRJ450 promises a more luxurious interior, including a private-jet style environment and the removal of overhead bins to provide more space for luggage.
Beyond regional aircraft upgrades, United plans to induct over 250 new aircraft by April 2028, including widebody and narrowbody models such as Boeing 787-9s, Airbus A321-200NXs (with Coastliner configurations), and Boeing 737 MAXs. These new aircraft will feature advanced seating and cabin layouts, including lie-flat seats in United Polaris, part of the airline’s United Next strategy launched in 2021. The initiative aims to deliver a more consistent and premium onboard experience for travelers.
Regional Fleet Expansion and Certification
SkyWest has announced that its first CRJ450 modifications are underway, with commercial operations expected to begin in fall 2026. The fleet upgrade requires a supplemental type certificate from the FAA, which is currently being processed. At present, SkyWest operates 130 CRJ200s, averaging 23 years of age. United’s current fleet includes 30 CRJ200 aircraft sourced from SkyWest, which will transition into the CRJ450 model as part of this plan.
The fleet renewal and replacement initiatives reflect United Airlines’ broader goal to modernize its regional and mainline fleets, with an emphasis on passenger comfort and operational efficiency.
