United Airlines has announced plans to introduce a new "Relax Row" seating option in economy class starting in 2027, aimed at enhancing comfort on long-haul international flights.
The airline intends to convert a row of three economy seats into a flat bed, with features such as adjustable leg rests and additional amenities including a mattress, blanket, and pillows. This initiative responds to a growing industry trend of providing flexible sleeping options for economy travelers without requiring a full upgrade to business class.
Expansion and Deployment
According to official statements, United plans to install up to 12 Relax Rows on more than 200 Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 aircraft by 2030, although specific routes and pricing details are yet to be announced. The development aligns with the airline's goal to increase premium revenue, which reportedly saw an 11 percent rise in 2025.
These amenities will be coupled with features such as adjustable leg rests that flip up to create a wider sleeping surface suitable for two adults and a child, along with travel kits for children.
Similar concepts already exist in the industry, including Air New Zealand’s "Skycouch" and All Nippon Airways’ "COUCHii," indicating a shift towards more flexible comfort options in economy cabins globally.
United aims for this feature to provide more space and comfort without the need for passengers to pay for premium cabins, reflecting an industry-wide focus on passenger experience tailored for longer flights.
