The United States Department of Transportation has waived USD16.7 million of a USD25 million fine imposed on American Airlines for inadequate wheelchair and mobility scooter services provided to passengers in 2024. Instead of monetary penalties, the airline is mandated to invest this amount in initiatives that enhance passenger accessibility and service quality.

This measure aims to incentivize airlines to make meaningful improvements that directly benefit travelers with disabilities, as stated by the DOT. The carrier previously settled with the authorities, agreeing to a USD50 million civil penalty, of which USD25 million was to be paid in fines and USD25 million allocated for service upgrades.

American Airlines had paid an initial USD8.3 million installment, with future payments scheduled but now waived contingent upon the airline investing USD16.1 million in equipment such as wheelchairs, lifts, and staff support software. The department also acknowledged USD700,000 invested by the airline in prior years. This approach echoes similar actions taken with Southwest Airlines, emphasizing a shift toward proactive service enhancements over punitive fines.

The decision highlights the U.S. government’s focus on fostering an accessible aviation environment. By requiring investment rather than penalties, authorities aim to drive tangible improvements that benefit passengers requiring mobility assistance, ensuring better airline compliance and passenger satisfaction.
