Recent disclosures by the U.S. military have revealed previously unseen footage from covert rescue operations in Iran, broadcast on 60 Minutes. The videos include footage of rescue helicopters, special operations aircraft, and the recovery of two U.S. service members, known as Dude 44 Alpha and Bravo, after their F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down in April 2026.
The images show the advanced HH-60W Jolly Green II rescue helicopter and two MC-130J Commando II aircraft on the ground inside Iran. Notably, one of the three Little Birds involved in the operation has been deliberately blurred in the footage. Gen. Dan Caine explained that the decision to obscure certain aircraft was to protect specific capabilities that remain in service and are considered sensitive. The operation involved two separate missions: the first to rescue the pilot during daylight, with about 21 aircraft, and a second, nighttime effort for Bravo, involving over 150 aircraft, including bombers, fighters, refuelling tankers, and rescue units. The latter mission was expansive, exemplifying the complexity and risk of deep behind-enemy-lines operations. The destroyed MC-130Js and Little Birds underscore the high stakes, with these aircraft deliberately sacrificed to prevent enemy forces from acquiring sensitive technology. The visual evidence emphasizes the importance of strategic clandestine capabilities, which are carefully guarded even as they are displayed for security and strategic reasons. The story of these operations is expected to inspire a Hollywood film directed by Michael Bay and a book scheduled for release in 2027.
