Astro Mechanica, a U.S.-based startup, has announced plans to conduct high-altitude and high-speed ground tests of its hybrid-electric supersonic engine in 2026. The company intends to demonstrate its ground demonstrator, which is based on a GE CT7 turbofan driving a generator to power two propulsors. The tests are a critical step toward flight testing, which is scheduled for 2027 in a specially designed propulsion testbed aircraft. By late 2028, the company aims to fly the powerplant in operational conditions.
The innovative engine project aims to revive supersonic travel with a focus on environmentally friendly and efficient propulsion. Astro Mechanica's approach involves using hybrid-electric technology to achieve high speeds while reducing emissions compared to traditional engines. The development of this engine is part of a broader trend within aerospace to explore sustainable supersonic flight options.
The path to commercial supersonic flight
The company’s leadership emphasizes that these milestones in testing are essential for validating the engine’s performance and feasibility for commercial use. Industry experts see this development as a significant step toward reintroducing supersonic passenger aircraft, potentially transforming the future of high-speed air travel. The project also highlights ongoing collaborations between startups and established aerospace components manufacturers, such as General Electric, to foster innovation in propulsion technology.
