Beginning December 15, 2025, airlines Qantas and Jetstar will implement a policy prohibiting the use and recharging of power banks during flights, including both domestic and international routes. This move aims to enhance passenger safety, following a comprehensive safety review and upcoming international guidelines from ICAO on lithium battery safety. The policy allows passengers to carry up to two power banks, each not exceeding 160 watt hours, in their cabin baggage, but these devices must remain within reach and cannot be used or charged onboard. Batteries embedded in smart bags must be removed and carried separately, and power banks are prohibited in checked luggage due to fire risk. The rule addresses safety concerns linked to the potential for lithium-ion battery fires, which have caused incidents on aircraft. As the use of personal electronic devices grows globally, this policy reflects a broader trend toward stricter safety measures in aviation to reduce fire hazards and align with international standards. Future airline regulations may follow suit, emphasizing the importance of safe handling and transportation of lithium-powered devices to ensure safer skies for all travelers.
