A significant milestone in India’s aviation development was reached as a validation flight landed at Bhogapuram airport in Andhra Pradesh. The test flight, operated by Air India, confirmed that the runway, navigation systems, and safety protocols are ready for commercial operations. Union Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu, accompanied by officials, participated in the event, marking a historic moment for the region.
Naidu emphasized the airport’s long-term potential, recalling its conception in 2014 and highlighting its strategic importance for tourism and mineral resources. The project was accelerated following political support in 2024, with nearly all construction completed. The GMR Group and L&T have contributed significantly to its development, envisaging Bhogapuram as a future MRO hub and a center for training domestic youth.
India’s expanding aviation infrastructure was also discussed, with the country operating over 840 aircraft and planning substantial fleet additions in the coming years. Naidu underscored the government’s efforts to develop multiple airports to boost regional connectivity and support economic growth.
During the event, a water salute was given to the aircraft, and local residents gathered to witness the milestone. The new airport is set to replace Visakhapatnam as the primary regional airport by mid-2026, offering advanced facilities designed for both day and night international flights. Once operational, Bhogapuram is expected to handle six million passengers annually, supporting regional tourism, cargo, and long-term development initiatives.
