Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is adopting an innovative AI platform designed to improve its aircraft turnaround processes. Developed by Schiphol Group's subsidiary, Aviation Solutions, the Deep Turnaround system leverages CCTV cameras at gates to analyze and automatically log key turnaround events. This data feeds into the airport’s digital twin, enabling detailed process analysis and optimization.
The deployment aims to enhance on-time performance and operational predictability by providing airport staff with real-time insights, facilitating more efficient decision-making. According to Andy Margolis, Vice President of Operations at YVR, integrating digital technologies aligns with the airport’s strategic goals to deliver improved services to passengers and airlines.
Initially installed at select gates, the system is expected to expand through multiple phases. Caroline Massart of Aviation Solutions noted that YVR joins a global community of airports transforming airside operations with AI-driven tools. Air Canada’s manager of on-time performance, Anna McMurdo, anticipates that these analytics will enable better estimation of departure times, ultimately boosting reliability.
This development exemplifies the broader trend toward advanced digital solutions in airport management, promising significant gains in efficiency, sustainability, and passenger satisfaction.
