Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is implementing an advanced AI-driven platform called Deep Turnaround in cooperation with Aviation Solutions, a subsidiary of Schiphol Group. The technology is designed to improve the efficiency of aircraft turnaround operations, which include cargo handling, baggage services, cleaning, catering, technical inspections, and boarding. By leveraging CCTV footage, the platform analyzes turnaround events and integrates data into the airport’s Digital Twin system to enhance real-time decision-making.
This initiative aims to reduce delays and increase the predictability of aircraft schedules, ultimately improving on-time performance. "Investing in digital technologies is a key part of YVR’s innovation strategy," said Andy Margolis, Vice President of Operations. The platform is initially being deployed at select gates, with plans for phased expansion aligned with the airport's growth in passenger and cargo traffic.
Enhancing airport operational resilience
Both YVR and Schiphol Group are partners of the FTE Digital, Innovation & Startup Hub, emphasizing their commitment to technological advancement in aviation. The use of Deep Turnaround supports the broader digital transformation ambitions of the airport and aims to create a smarter, more reliable, and efficient aviation environment.
This digital innovation is part of a global trend towards automating and optimizing ground operations, aiming to deliver better punctuality and customer experience for airlines, ground handlers, and passengers, as the airport continues to evolve with increasing volumes of air traffic.
