Vanuatu Government Supports Air Vanuatu Financially
The government of Vanuatu has entered into a guarantee agreement with the Vanuatu National Provident Fund (VNPF) to facilitate the repayment of a VUV1 billion (USD8.2 million) loan to Air Vanuatu, the country's national airline. This agreement, signed on October 24, commits the government to an initial payment of VUV250 million (USD2 million), along with accrued interest and penalties, and aims to settle the remaining amount within 90 days.
Air Vanuatu, headquartered in Port Vila, operates as a scheduled carrier with a fleet of five aircraft, serving 15 destinations via 26 routes, including 18 daily flights. The airline has faced financial challenges, as reports indicate that it has not made loan repayments in recent years, prompting the government and VNPF to act to support its stability.
This move aims to help stabilize the airline’s finances, ensuring continued connectivity within Vanuatu and the wider Pacific region. Industry observers see this as part of broader efforts to revitalize the airline and address operational difficulties amid economic constraints. The government’s support is viewed as vital for the airline's future resilience and growth prospects.
