Sustainable fuel developer Velocys has introduced its new AlphaCore 800 reactor, which is designed to produce up to 800 barrels of Fischer-Tropsch liquids per day. This marks a significant increase in capacity compared to previous models and aims to support larger-scale sustainable aviation fuel projects.

The AlphaCore 800 joins Velocys' existing reactor lineup, providing a throughput-based product range suitable for various project sizes. The company highlights that the larger reactors can reduce the number of units needed for significant capacities, simplifying plant design and lowering costs. For example, a plant producing 60,000 tonnes of fuel annually could operate with just two AlphaCore 800 reactors instead of multiple smaller units.

According to Velocys CEO Matthew Viergutz, the new reactor enables developers to expand capacity per unit while maintaining performance and reliability. The technology is especially suited to projects aiming for over 100,000 tonnes per year of sustainable fuel, addressing the industry’s goal of scaling clean fuel production. Velocys states that this advancement reflects increasing market demands for efficient, scalable SAF manufacturing.

Developers and industry stakeholders see AlphaCore 800 as a critical step in the transition towards greener aviation fuels, with Velocys positioning its technology for broader deployment in the years ahead.
