The House of the Sea in Vienna's sixth district is a remarkable example of how historic architecture can be repurposed for modern science and tourism. Housed within a former World War II flak tower, the facility has evolved over decades into one of Austria's most significant zoological centers. It spans eleven floors and accommodates over 10,000 animals, integrating complex technical systems within the fortress's massive concrete walls to support marine, reptile, and bird habitats.

The original military structure, built between 1943 and 1944 to defend the city, boasted walls up to 3.5 meters thick. After the war, it was abandoned before being converted into an aquarium and zoo, with continuous structural adjustments allowing the creation of diverse habitats. The highlight is the expansive shark tank, which extends over two floors and holds hundreds of thousands of liters of saltwater. Visitors can walk through a glass tunnel beneath the marine exhibit, thanks to advanced filtration and climate control systems that sustain water quality and temperature.

Inside, tropical environments recreate the natural habitats of monkeys, birds, and bats, with high humidity and temperature control. The zoo collaborates internationally for breeding programs and research, and maintains a full-service veterinary clinic. Recent upgrades include a panoramic observation deck and dining areas designed to serve both visitors and external guests, integrating urban development with ecological preservation. The infrastructure supports sophisticated logistics for animal care, water treatment, and energy efficiency, demonstrating how technical innovation can transform a historically hostile site into a vibrant biodiversity center.
