Vietjet and the University of Oxford have announced a significant research breakthrough in sustainable aviation. Unveiled during a visit by Vietnam’s General Secretary Tô Lâm to the United Kingdom, the collaboration aims to develop innovative solutions aligned with global efforts to achieve Net Zero emissions in aviation by mid-century.

Directed by Professor Myles Allen from Oxford Net Zero, the research centers on Geological Balance Fuel (GBF), an advanced aviation fuel that offsets carbon emissions through long-term geological storage of CO₂. Initial findings indicate that GBF could be a practical and cost-effective pathway for the aviation industry to reduce its environmental impact while integrating seamlessly with existing fuel supply systems.

This initiative not only advances technological innovation but also promotes educational exchange, including research fellowships and post-doctoral programs between Việt Nam and the UK. As part of Vietjet’s 'Fly Green' campaign, the airline has been actively adopting sustainability measures such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), reforestation efforts, investments in renewable energy, and AI operational efficiencies—reducing passenger emissions by 38 percent compared to previous aircraft models.

"Vietjet is committed to partnering with international institutions to build a humane, prosperous, and sustainable future for generations to come,"

said Nguyễn Thị Phương Thảo, chairwoman of Vietjet.

Future prospects for the project include broader applications of GBF technology and strengthened collaborations in education and research, confirming a shared commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation in aviation.
