Vietnam Airlines, the national carrier of Vietnam, reported robust financial and operational performance for the first quarter of 2026. Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East impacting global markets, the airline managed to increase its passenger numbers and expand its international route network.

During this period, the airline operated nearly 43,000 flights and transported over 6.9 million passengers, reflecting year-on-year growth rates of 11% and 12%, respectively. These figures indicate a strong recovery trend supported by strategic network expansion and fleet renewal initiatives.

Strategic Developments and Network Expansion

Vietnam Airlines has continued to upgrade its fleet, signing an agreement to purchase 50 Boeing 737-8 aircraft, which will enhance operational efficiency and competitiveness. The airline also announced new route launches, including a direct service between Hà Nội and Amsterdam starting June 16, and an increase in weekly flights to Moscow from July 1. These moves aim to strengthen Vietnam’s connectivity with key markets and support economic growth.

"Our focus is on maintaining operational stability in a complex geopolitics environment while expanding our reach and modernizing our fleet,"

said Vietnam Airlines spokesperson.

The airline achieved an industry-leading on-time departure rate of 80.4% in March and received global safety recognition, ranking among the top 25 full-service airlines worldwide by AirlineRatings. Financial results showed revenue exceeding VNĐ37.5 trillion (about US$1.5 billion) and net profit of VNĐ4.514 trillion, driven primarily by increased international demand.

Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite positive results, rising fuel prices due to geopolitical factors pose significant challenges. Jet A1 fuel prices are currently between $190 and $220 per barrel, nearly triple the usual range. The Vietnamese government is actively working to diversify fuel sources and stabilize prices, while Vietnam Airlines continues to optimize its operations for cost-efficiency and network flexibility.

Looking forward, the airline remains committed to maintaining high safety standards, operational stability, and expanding its international presence. These efforts are aligned with Vietnam’s broader strategy to boost economic integration and support sustainable national development amidst global uncertainties.
