Vietnam’s aviation industry has experienced a remarkable recovery from the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with passenger numbers expected to reach a record 84 million this year, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV). This growth surpasses the 16 million passengers recorded in 2021 and the 75 million in 2024, reflecting a strong rebound driven by increasing travel demand and a focus on expanding connectivity.

The country’s international flight network has also expanded significantly, growing from 130 routes before the pandemic to approximately 150 routes by 2025, connecting Vietnam with 30 different nations. Long-haul routes to Europe and North America are currently under review and negotiation, indicating ongoing efforts to deepen international air connectivity.

Market Development and New Entrants

The sector’s growth has been supported by the entry of new airlines, including Vietravel Airlines and SunPhuQuoc Airways, joining major players such as Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Pacific Airlines, and Bamboo Airways. CAAV Director Uông Việt Dũng stated that the entrance of these new competitors highlights the market’s potential and fosters healthy competition, leading to service improvements and product diversification.

Looking ahead, industry experts expect further investments in transport infrastructure and increased tourism activity to continue stimulating economic development in Vietnam and the surrounding regions, reinforcing air travel as a key driver of socio-economic growth.
