Vietnam's aviation industry is showing signs of a robust recovery as the country sees an increase in passenger numbers and tourism. In 2025, the sector served over 83.6 million travelers, including 46.9 million international visitors, with more than 84% arriving by air. The first quarter of 2026 continued this growth trajectory with a 16.4% increase year-on-year despite challenges such as surging fuel prices and geopolitical tensions.

According to Mr. Uong Viet Dung, Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, air transport is closely tied to the nation’s economic growth, with international visitors primarily arriving by air and playing a significant role in passenger traffic. However, rising fuel costs, especially the over 100% increase in jet fuel prices in April due to international tensions, have impacted airline operations, leading to nearly 5,000 flights being canceled in recent months.

The industry is actively exploring strategies to enhance resilience and sustainability, including potential new deals to boost tourism links and infrastructure development. The sector's growth is expected to continue, although it faces headwinds that require careful management and strategic planning to sustain this positive momentum.

Meanwhile, Vietnam is also setting ambitious goals for urban and regional development, including city-specific economic targets and infrastructure projects aimed at increasing airport accessibility and supporting tourism growth across the country.

Overall, Vietnam’s aviation sector is on a recovery path, contributing strongly to the country's tourism industry amidst global economic and geopolitical uncertainties, with ongoing efforts to adapt and grow in the years to come.
