Vietnam’s Phu Quoc International Airport is preparing to emerge as a fully self-service aviation hub ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2027 Forum scheduled for November 2027. The transformation is led by Sun Group in partnership with SITA, aiming to support the island’s growing air travel demand and position it as a key leisure destination in the region.
The new terminal will feature advanced airport technologies, including automated check-in, baggage handling, and boarding processes utilizing biometric recognition. Once completed, passenger capacity is projected to reach 24 million annually, with long-term plans to scale up to 50 million passengers. The airport's infrastructure will incorporate SITA's suite of solutions, such as Smart Path kiosks, bag drop units, automated gates, and biometric systems, to provide a seamless passenger experience.
Strategic Development and Expansion
This project forms part of Vietnam’s broader efforts to expand its airport network, with plans to replicate this model at other airports, including Phan Thiet, Con Dao, and Rach Gia, over the next five years. The initiative aims to elevate the country's airport standards to meet five-star Skytrax benchmarks and foster regional connectivity.
Nguyen Chi Thanh, President of Sun Group, highlighted their commitment to developing world-class infrastructure that enhances the tourism sector. SITA’s President for Asia Pacific, Sumesh Patel, added that supporting Vietnam’s fast-growing aviation market with innovative technologies will strengthen the country’s position as a regional travel hub. The partnership also involves operating the airport in collaboration with Singapore’s Changi Airports International.
Overall, this initiative signifies Vietnam’s ambition to modernize its aviation infrastructure and support its burgeoning tourism industry, making Phu Quoc a prominent player in Asia’s travel landscape.
