VietJet, a Vietnamese low-cost carrier, is preparing to expand into the European market by launching a new route linking Hanoi and Prague via Almaty, Kazakhstan. The flights are scheduled to begin on July 11, operating twice a week with Airbus A330 aircraft, under Kazakhstan’s open skies regime, utilizing fifth-freedom rights on the Almaty-Prague segment.

Kazakhstan’s Transport Ministry confirmed these plans, highlighting efforts to open new routes and strengthen international ties. Prague’s Václav Havel Airport has prioritized route development to Vietnam due to significant demand from the Vietnamese community, which numbers over 38,000 in the Czech Republic.

Strategic Expansion and Fleet Plans

The planned Prague-Hanoi service reflects VietJet’s broader strategy to expand its long-haul network and increase presence in Central Asia. The airline’s joint venture, VietJet Qazaqstan, currently operates domestic and regional flights with Bombardier DHC-8-400 turboprops, and aims to transition to a fleet of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft for broader international expansion.

“VietJet’s long-term strategy includes fleet expansion and new route development, enabling it to serve European destinations directly and efficiently,” said a company spokesperson.

VietJet has also ordered 20 Airbus A330neos, with deliveries expected from mid-2026. These aircraft will enable nonstop flights from Vietnam to Western Europe, including potential routes to London or Paris. Currently, Vietnam Airlines dominates Vietnam-Europe capacity, but new routes like Prague remain unserved, presenting an opportunity for VietJet to fill this gap.

The airline has previously operated charter flights to Russia and Kazakhstan, and has been approached for comment regarding the new Prague route. The move aligns with VietJet’s long-term expansion plans, leveraging Kazakhstan’s geographical position to serve European destinations efficiently.
