Virgin Atlantic, a UK-based long-haul airline, has announced the sale of six Airbus A330-900 aircraft to global lessor AerCap in a sale-and-leaseback arrangement. The aircraft are part of Virgin Atlantic's existing orderbook and are scheduled to be delivered between the second quarter of 2026 and the fourth quarter of 2027.

Under the terms of the agreement, AerCap will purchase the aircraft upon delivery and lease them back to Virgin Atlantic, giving the airline the flexibility to modernize its fleet without increasing its ownership commitments. The airline plans to use these new widebodies to enhance its transatlantic routes with updated cabins, including Premium and Upper Class offerings, and additional Retreat Suites, aiming to attract a younger, more efficient passenger base.

This transaction exemplifies a broader industry trend where airlines leverage leasing strategies to support fleet renewal and operational flexibility. By relying more on lease arrangements, Virgin Atlantic can introduce new capacity while managing fleet complexity and financial risk. Meanwhile, AerCap, which manages a fleet of over 1,400 aircraft globally, underscores the continued popularity of the Airbus A330-900 among airlines seeking a long-range, fuel-efficient widebody solution.

Peter Anderson, AerCap’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized the aircraft's strong demand worldwide, noting its long range, operational economics, and versatility. The deal highlights how airlines and lessors are working together to foster a more flexible, efficient, and modern long-haul fleet landscape. Virgin Atlantic’s fleet simplification efforts are supported by these long-term leasing arrangements, providing the airline with strategic capacity for future growth and service modernization.
