Virgin Australia has announced an extension of its Pets in Cabin trial until June 30, 2026, citing strong customer demand and positive feedback. The service, launched in October 2025, allows small dogs and cats to travel with their owners on select domestic routes, including Melbourne to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast airports. Initially scheduled to end in January 2026, the trial will now continue and expand to additional routes, with cats permitted on all Pets in Cabin flights starting late January 2026.

During peak holiday periods, more than 300 pets traveled with their owners, indicating high interest. The airline's Chief Marketing and Customer Operations Officer, Libby Minogue, highlighted that the response exceeded expectations and emphasized the service’s value for travelers wanting to include their pets.

Industry voices, including veterinarian Dr. Katrina Warren, welcomed the extension, describing the trial as a significant advancement for pet owners. Airport officials from Melbourne, Sunshine Coast, and Gold Coast also expressed support, noting the positive impact on passenger flexibility and choice. Virgin Australia is the first major Australian carrier to offer such a service for domestic flights.

The airline’s move to extend and potentially broaden the trial underscores the evolving accessibility and acceptance of traveling with pets in Australia’s aviation sector, aligning with consumer demand for inclusive travel options.
