Visa has released a comprehensive report highlighting recent trends in airline fraud within Europe. Despite a 2.9% reduction in overall fraud rates, airline-related fraud losses have increased to $77.7 million over the past year. Such losses are largely attributed to increasingly sophisticated cross-border schemes, which are now responsible for the majority of incidents, especially through e‑commerce channels.

The report details that 65% of these losses originate from international transactions, predominantly involving high-risk corridors. Criminal tactics such as triangulation—where fake travel sites and synthetic IDs are exploited—are common, often aimed at abusing buy now, pay later services. Visa emphasizes that deploying intelligent controls, including account-takeover protections, tokenisation, and real-time risk scoring, is essential to combat these evolving threats without impacting customer experience.

Regionally, the Americas account for 64% of fraud share, while Europe accounts for a significant 47% of airline sales being cross-border. Most fraud involving European sales also includes transactions with issuers outside Europe. An official from Visa, Cora Constantin, stressed that leveraging advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, and real-time detection is key to staying ahead of fraudsters, ensuring revenue security, and maintaining passenger trust.

The whitepaper titled "The next step in payment security: How airlines can get ahead of fraudsters" advocates for strategic technological upgrades and targeted interventions. These measures aim to bolster airline security infrastructure, safeguarding both revenues and customer experience in a rapidly changing threat landscape.
