Friedrichshafen, Germany — One year after its acquisition by Austrian aircraft manufacturer Diamond Aircraft, Volocopter has announced the development of a new ultralight multicopter. The aircraft, named VoloXPro, is intended as a follow-on to its popular VoloCity air taxi and is targeted at flight training schools, flying clubs, and sightseeing operators in Europe.
The VoloXPro is expected to be certified in Germany by the end of 2026 as a light sport aircraft. Priced at €490,000, the aircraft will also be available internationally as an air taxi. It shares many components with the VoloCity, including flight-control systems and lithium-ion batteries, but weighs only 600 kilograms (1,323 pounds) at maximum takeoff weight, compared to 1,000 kilograms for the VoloCity. The aircraft has a range of approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles), double the VoloCity's geographic operational range.
Diamond Aircraft's acquisition of Volocopter in March 2025 rescued the German eVTOL startup from insolvency. Diamond, owned by Chinese automotive supplier Wanfeng, integrates its supply chain, certification experience, and distribution network into the newly combined company, enabling faster market entry for new products.
“What happened a year ago is that Volocopter was acquired by Diamond and this has caused a lot of changes for the better in the sense that we’ve taken a lot of Diamond’s DNA together with Volocopter’s DNA,”
Marie Masson, senior business development manager at Volocopter, explained.
Volocopter is currently certifying its existing VoloCity models to meet European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) requirements, with delivery plans to German air rescue organization ADAC Luftrettung set for the next 12 to 18 months. At the 2023 Paris Air Show, ADAC Luftrettung signed agreements to initially purchase two VoloCity aircraft, with plans to acquire up to 150 aircraft in total.
According to Masson, Volocopter’s aircraft are the only eVTOLs in operational flight in Europe, demonstrating substantial progress beyond conceptual renders and highlighting the industry’s recent growth and technological achievements.
