The Washington Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 168th General Support Aviation Battalion, recently collaborated with Central Pierce Fire and Rescue to conduct fire suppression training involving water bucket drops using UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. Held near Puyallup, Washington, on May 7, 2026, the exercise aimed to enhance joint response capabilities for wildfire incidents.
The training emphasized coordination between military aviation crews and civilian firefighters. During the exercise, multiple water drops were executed, with ground personnel directing target locations and evaluating the effectiveness of each operation. Officials highlighted that such high-demand missions ensure crews remain proficient and prepared for real-world wildfire support across the region.
Officials from the Department of Natural Resources and the National Guard have emphasized that aviation assets play a critical role in wildfire suppression, especially in environments where ground access is limited and hazards are high. These collaborative drills help build the familiarity, communication, and operational safety necessary for successful wildfire response, especially as fire seasons grow more intense due to climate change.
Since 2012, the Washington National Guard has supported wildfire efforts throughout the state, training regularly with fire agencies. Such joint exercises strengthen crisis response, ensuring both military and civilian teams are ready to deploy equipment and personnel efficiently when fires threaten communities.
