Western Australia is actively pursuing deeper links with China to bolster its tourism, trade, and aviation sectors. Leading a high-profile delegation, WA officials along with tourism operators and Perth Airport representatives, are engaging with Chinese counterparts, notably aviation companies China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines. One of the key outcomes is the transition of China Southern’s Guangzhou-Perth route into a year-round service, supplying an additional 42,000 seats annually and fostering economic growth through increased tourism and job creation.
The expansion of international flight routes now supports 23 direct international services from Perth, reinforcing the city’s status as Australia’s western gateway. The mission includes building strategic partnerships with Chinese travel platforms Ctrip and Fliggy to promote WA’s attractions. In 2025, Chinese visitors generated $488 million in expenditure, with the visitor count expected to grow thanks to enhanced connectivity and targeted marketing campaigns, such as the relaunch of the "Walking On A Dream" branding initiative.
Strategic Economic Goals
The delegation’s efforts are aligned with Western Australia’s broader economic diversification strategy, aiming to sustain tourism-driven growth and employment. The government’s investments in infrastructure, coupled with international alliances, help ensure the state remains competitive and attractive for high-spending international tourists. The activities mark a significant step toward solidifying WA’s presence in the global tourism landscape, leveraging international partnerships and expanded flight options to support future growth.
The collective activities underscore Western Australia’s commitment to building resilient, sustainable tourism and trade networks, with China playing a pivotal role. Moving forward, these initiatives aim to secure ongoing benefits for local businesses and communities, ensuring WA’s vibrant tourism industry remains a key driver of economic prosperity.
