The government of Western Australia announced a significant financial commitment in its 2026-2027 budget to support regional airline operations. Over AUD5 million (USD3.6 million) will be allocated to subsidize regional routes operated by Aviair and Nexus Airlines.
Nexus Airlines will receive AUD3.8 million (USD2.7 million) to bolster its Inter-Regional Flight Network, connecting key towns such as Geraldton, Karratha, Port Hedland, and Broome. This move aims to improve regional connectivity and reduce travel times for remote communities.
In parallel, Aviair will secure over AUD1.3 million (USD930,000) to maintain essential flights linking Kununurra, Halls Creek, Balgo Hill, and Derby. The subsidies are part of efforts to decrease operating costs, particularly fuel expenses, and support access to healthcare and other vital services.
Support for Rural Communities and Aviation
The funding comes at a time when regional airlines owned by HM Consolidated are facing rising fuel costs. The subsidies are designed to mitigate these expenses, applying across multiple routes, including those operated by Dash 8 Q400 aircraft owned by Aviair under the Nexus Airlines brand. These measures are aligned with broader governmental policies promoting regional development and ensuring consistent mobility for isolated communities.
Overall, these investments are expected to strengthen regional aviation infrastructure, facilitate economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for residents in Western Australia's remote areas.
