Wizz Air CEO József Váradi expressed confidence in the airline's current strategy despite ongoing challenges facing the aviation industry. Speaking at the CAPA Airline Leaders Summit in Berlin, he stated that the airline does not plan to cut capacity in the coming weeks, even as fuel prices continue to increase significantly.

Váradi highlighted that Wizz Air has implemented cost-saving measures and is hedging 70% of its jet fuel needs at $700 per metric ton for the next ten months to mitigate fuel cost impacts. He indicated that the airline sees no imminent shortage of jet fuel in Europe, noting that traders are likely to find alternative sources if needed, which reduces concerns about major disruptions.

Aircraft and Network Strategies

The airline has benefited from strategic network streamlining, including the closure of its Abu Dhabi base, and is optimistic about returning its entire fleet to full operation within 18 months. Despite experiencing difficulties due to external factors such as regional conflicts and Pratt & Whitney GTF engine issues, Váradi affirmed his commitment to the GTF engine, citing its long-term potential.

"The engine has long-term potential. Over the next 30 years, I still think it is the right engine for us,"
said Váradi. He acknowledged that the decision to enter Abu Dhabi may have been a mistake given durability issues under harsh conditions but remains positive about the engine's future prospects.

Váradi also dismissed the possibility of Wizz Air expanding into long-haul operations soon, emphasizing the airline's focus on short- and medium-haul routes. Recently, the airline adjusted its order for A321XLR aircraft, reinforcing its strategic focus on its existing fleet and route network.
