The World Travel Agents Associations Alliance (WTAAA) has urged airlines to adopt more transparent and consistent practices regarding surcharges levied on passengers, citing growing concerns over consumer confusion and declining trust. In a comprehensive statement, WTAAA emphasized that inconsistent labeling—such as YQ or YR—has complicated travelers’ ability to gauge the true cost of their trips.
WTAAA highly recommends that airlines disclose surcharges clearly throughout the booking process and consider incorporating these charges into the base fare. Such measures aim to simplify pricing structures and promote transparency. The alliance also advocates for fair and timely refunds of surcharge amounts when flights are canceled, alongside advance notice of any surcharge modifications to avoid disrupting travelers and travel agents.
Otto de Vries, the Executive Director of WTAAA, stated, "Travelers need clarity and confidence when they book. While some cost recovery is justified in a volatile environment, transparent pricing practices are essential to maintaining trust in the airline industry."
The organization suggests industry-wide dialogue to streamline fare structures, making it easier for consumers to compare prices and understand the overall expenses involved in air travel. Although WTAAA recognizes that a uniform policy may not be feasible across all markets, it underscores that transparency remains a key universal expectation for fostering confidence in the travel industry.
