Xizang's civil aviation industry has experienced remarkable development over the past sixty years, achieving a record high of over 8 million passengers in 2025. The region's fleet now handles 71,000 flights annually, reflecting rapid growth in passenger and cargo traffic, according to regional authorities.

The story dates back to 1965 when the first Airbus flight departed Beijing and arrived in Lhasa, marking the start of modern civil aviation in the region. Initially operated from Damxung airport, located at 4,230 meters above sea level, aviation facilities faced challenges due to the high altitude and harsh climate. A more accessible airport, LKIA, was established in 1966 in the Yarlung Zangbo River valley, which remains the main aviation hub today at 3,500 meters above sea level.

Over subsequent decades, air routes expanded from a single origin to 193 connections linking 81 cities, serving government officials, residents, and tourists alike. Cargo transport has advanced from basic necessities to a range of high-value products including Tibetan specialties like caterpillar fungi and yak meat. Tourism has surged, with 2024 recording 2.5 million visitors, a more-than-40-fold increase compared to 2010.

Officials and residents have recalled early efforts to maintain flights amid winter snows, with passengers and staff clearing runways to ensure operations. Today, Xizang continues to develop its civil aviation sector, fostering regional integration and economic growth.
