The founder of Zinc Aviation has outlined a strategy to penetrate the Australian airline market by adopting a model inspired by the low-cost carrier Ryanair. With backing from approximately $140 million, Peter Kelly, a former Qantas executive, aims to establish the startup, emphasizing efficient aircraft utilization, such as operating planes for at least 12 hours daily.

Zinc sees the opening of Western Sydney International Airport as a pivotal opportunity to challenge existing incumbents protected by infrastructural scarcity. Kelly criticizes previous failed airlines like Bonza and Rex for flawed business models rooted in Sydney's constrained airport environment, which hindered their cost competitiveness.

The Proposed Business Model and Market Opportunity

The proposed airline intends to operate solely Airbus A321neo aircraft, focusing on high-frequency routes connecting Western Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Brisbane. Zinc claims that recent structural changes at WSI allow for a more flexible market entry, unlike Sydney’s congested airport environment, which has historically limited new entrants.

"The business models were flawed from inception[…] Structural slot and gate constraints of SYD. Structural cost disadvantage. Undercapitalization. The wrong aircraft. The wrong routes. The wrong moment," said the Zinc website.

Kelly is currently seeking funding to finance aircraft deposits and operational expenses, and the company positions itself to exploit the structural advantages offered by WSI. The initiative aims to provide a competitive, efficient alternative within Australia's domestic aviation sector.
