Overview

ITA Airways is Italy's flag carrier. According to Wikipedia, it was founded on 11 November 2020 and began flying on 15 October 2021, succeeding Alitalia. It is headquartered in Rome. The Italian government has been the majority owner, with Lufthansa Group holding 41%. In May 2026 Lufthansa said it would raise its stake to 90% for €325 million, subject to regulatory approval. One Mile at a Time reports that closing is expected in the first quarter of 2027. The airline left SkyTeam and joined Star Alliance in April 2026.

Network and hubs

The main hub is Rome Fiumicino, with Milan Linate as a focus city. Wikipedia lists 74 destinations. The network covers domestic Italy, Europe, and long-haul routes. Lufthansa has said it expects to bring ITA into joint ventures on the North Atlantic and between Europe and Japan (CAPA).

Fleet

Wikipedia gives a fleet of about 110 aircraft in 2026. The long-haul fleet includes the Airbus A350-900, which entered service in 2022. The rest of the fleet comprises Airbus narrowbodies and A330 family widebodies. The airline has also worked with Airbus as a strategic partner on fleet renewal.

On board

Long-haul A350-900s have been retrofitted with three cabins. Seatmaps.com lists 33 Business, 24 Premium Economy and 262 Economy seats. Business has a 4-abreast layout with direct aisle access. A 2022 Simple Flying tour reported Comfort Economy seats with about 34 inches of legroom, against 31-32 inches in standard Economy.
