Korean Air (KE, Seoul Incheon) is scheduled to propose a resolution at their upcoming shareholders' meeting in June 2026 to acquire the remaining 36.1% stake in Asiana Airlines (OZ, Seoul Incheon), according to local news outlet News Tomato. Currently, Korean Air owns 63.9% of Asiana Airlines, and intends to complete the acquisition to streamline its governance and operational structure.

The planned merger aims to unify the brands under a single airline entity by December 17, 2026. As part of the integration, Korean Air will adopt its operational standards across Asiana Airlines, with management emphasizing safety and efficiency. Employees may benefit from increased salaries, approximately 32% higher than current levels, aligning with Korean Air standards, despite ongoing disputes over seniority with the pilots' union.

Integration and Strategic Changes

Korean Air is preparing for the amalgamation by planning the sale of Asiana Cargo and relocating Asiana Airlines’ operations to Seoul Incheon Terminal 2 in January 2026. The integration also includes harmonizing job classifications and implementing safety protocols. Both airlines are expected to pursue a merged operational model to enhance competitiveness.

Asiana Airlines Under Emergency Management

Chief Executive Song Bo-young of Asiana Airlines expressed optimism about the merger, describing 2026 as a pivotal year for the carrier. Nevertheless, he acknowledged challenges posed by geopolitical issues, currency fluctuations, and increased costs due to higher lease, maintenance, and fuel expenses paid in US dollars. The airline recently entered an emergency management phase as of March 25, to address these financial pressures amid regional conflicts.

During this period, the airline committed to maintaining safety and operational security, while striving to improve profitability through concerted efforts. The merger and operational adjustments are part of Korean Air’s strategic move to consolidate its presence market-wide.
