Air Canada is adding eight international routes from Toronto Pearson (YYZ), five of them starting this winter and three in summer 2027, according to Simple Flying. The first, to Tenerife, begins on 25 October, the start of the Northern Winter schedule.

The new routes

Simple Flying lists the following launches from Toronto:

  • Tenerife: from 25 October, twice weekly (Thursday and Sunday), Airbus A321XLR
  • Merida: from 21 November, twice weekly (Monday and Saturday), Airbus A220-300
  • Guatemala City: from 1 December, weekly (Tuesday), Airbus A330-300
  • Quito: from 5 December, weekly (Saturday), Boeing 787-9
  • Roatan: from 13 December, weekly (Sunday), operated by Air Canada Rouge with a Boeing 737 MAX 8
  • Oslo: from 2 June 2027, four times weekly (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday), A321XLR
  • Shannon: from 10 June 2027, three times weekly (Wednesday, Friday, Sunday), A321XLR
  • Nice: from 16 June 2027, twice weekly (Wednesday and Saturday), Airbus A330-300

Tenerife and the Canary Islands

The Tenerife service will use the airline's 182-seat A321XLR, which has 14 Signature Class seats in a 1-1 layout with fully flat beds, plus 168 Economy seats. A weekly Montreal to Tenerife service starts at the same time. Simple Flying says Air Canada will be the only North American operator serving the Canary Islands when flights begin, but that will change in December when Air Transat launches Toronto to Las Palmas, another island in the archipelago.

The A321XLR and Europe

Air Canada ordered the A321XLR in 2022 and, according to Simple Flying, received its first aircraft in April 2026. Between June and September it operated around 477 flights with the type, to destinations including Toulouse, Lyon, Nantes, Porto and Berlin. Oslo and Shannon will be the next European additions from Toronto. Separately, from May the airline will add a year-round A321XLR service to London Heathrow, its fifth daily flight there; Simple Flying notes it had originally planned to use the type on the route this summer.

Winter capacity

The winter season runs from 25 October to 27 March 2027. Simple Flying reports Air Canada is raising capacity across its network by 10%, with more than 36,000 flights planned from Toronto including regional partners. New York is expected to be the busiest destination, with up to 14 daily departures split between LaGuardia and Newark, and Cancun is due up to four daily flights.

What this means for travellers

  • Toronto-based travellers get new nonstop options to Tenerife, Merida, Guatemala City, Quito and Roatan for winter trips, several with only one or two flights a week, so dates need checking carefully.
  • Summer 2027 adds Oslo, Shannon and Nice, which could also help connecting passengers from elsewhere in Canada.
  • Tenerife passengers on the A321XLR will have lie-flat Signature Class seats on a leisure route.
  • Those wanting the Canary Islands from Toronto will also have an Air Transat option to Las Palmas from December. Comparing the two carriers may help; see Air Transat vs Air Canada.
