Air India is preparing for the Northern Summer 2026 season by significantly restructuring its fleet deployment to accommodate increasing passenger demand. Specifically, the airline will replace the Boeing 787-8 with the Boeing 777-300ER on several key routes in the United Kingdom and Europe. These changes, scheduled for August 2026, include more flights connecting major Indian cities with London Gatwick, Birmingham, and Amsterdam, aiming to enhance capacity and premium service offerings.
The deployment of the Boeing 777-300ER, the airline's largest aircraft, will enable Air India to boost total capacity during peak travel months while also increasing the number of premium seats per flight. This strategic move aligns with the airline's ongoing efforts to expand its long-haul presence and improve revenue prospects across its network.
Expanded European and UK Operations
Starting from August 2026, Air India will operate four weekly flights between Ahmedabad and London Gatwick, three weekly flights from Amritsar to Birmingham, and three weekly flights from Delhi to Birmingham, all utilizing the Boeing 777-300ER. The airline will also switch from the 787-8 to the 777-300ER on flights between Amsterdam and London Gatwick. These updates follow the announcement of the 777-300ER replacing the 787 Dreamliner on routes to Melbourne, indicative of the airline’s fleet modernization strategy.
Adjustments on Other International Routes
Beyond the UK, the airline is reconfiguring routes across the Middle East and Asia. Flights between Delhi and Dubai are expected to see both the 787-8 and 787-9 operate later in 2026, with the 787-9 replacing the 787-8 on Mumbai-Dubai from June to July. The Delhi-Frankfurt route will also operate the 777-300ER starting March 2026, replacing the 787-9, while flights from Delhi to Tokyo Haneda will adopt the 777-300ER from June 2026 for increased capacity. A capacity reduction is noted on Mumbai to Frankfurt route from August 2026, where the 787-8 will replace the 787-9, reflecting a strategic realignment of capacity.
This fleet reshuffling highlights Air India's focus on expanding its global footprint and improving customer service through upgraded aircraft and increased capacity during high-demand periods. The delivery of its first line-fit Boeing 787-9 earlier in 2026 further demonstrates the airline’s commitment to modernizing its fleet and enhancing passenger experience with advanced cabins and amenities.
