Airlines Move to Absorb Routes Following Spirit Airlines Demise

May 6, 2026 — Just three days after the official announcement of Spirit Airlines' demise, U.S. carriers are rapidly moving to integrate the shuttered airline's former markets into their networks. Budget airlines are launching new routes and expanding existing schedules to fill the void created by Spirit's cessation of operations, according to a report from TravelPulse.

The expansion efforts by various airlines come as many were already planning growth in airports where Spirit also operated. This development provides an opportune moment for these carriers to establish a more significant presence in key markets affected by Spirit's departure.

Southwest Airlines Reinforces Gateways

Southwest Airlines announced enhancements to its Las Vegas and Orlando gateways two days subsequent to Spirit's shutdown. The airline plans to add more flight frequencies to 15 existing domestic routes from Las Vegas. By spring 2027, Southwest intends to launch 10 new routes from Las Vegas, including international service to Mexico and Costa Rica, alongside extended domestic flights to Hawaii, Alaska, Boston, and Philadelphia.

In Orlando, Southwest will implement its largest flight schedule to date in 2026, introducing new or additional flights on 23 routes to or from the Central Florida market. Projections indicate that by 2027, Southwest will facilitate over 200 daily departures from Orlando.

JetBlue Expands Fort Lauderdale Focus

JetBlue, which had already prioritized its Fort Lauderdale, Florida, base for growth, is further expanding its operations at the South Florida airport. The airline is adding 11 new destinations and increasing flight frequencies. Additionally, JetBlue is offering a status match for former Spirit customers.

New destinations from Fort Lauderdale include Barranquilla, Colombia; Baltimore; Cali, Colombia; Charlotte, N.C.; Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis; Nashville, Tenn.; Detroit; Houston; Chicago; and Ponce, Puerto Rico. These new flights are currently available for booking.

Marty St. George, JetBlue's president, stated, "We're stepping up for Fort Lauderdale to ensure the availability of air service in this market. Our focus is simple: make it easier for customers to stay connected with the people and places that matter, while delivering the service, comfort and value they expect from JetBlue."

Breeze Airways Launches New Atlantic City Routes

Breeze Airways is entering markets previously served by Spirit, announcing the launch of four new routes from New Jersey's Atlantic City Airport (ACY) to leisure destinations in Florida and South Carolina. These new routes, formerly operated by Spirit, are scheduled to roll out from this summer through the fall and winter, as reported by NJ.com.

  • Orlando, Florida: Nonstop daily service commencing July 3.
  • Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Nonstop service beginning October 22.
  • Fort Myers, Florida: Nonstop service beginning October 22.
  • West Palm Beach, Florida: Nonstop service beginning December 17.

These airline expansions collectively aim to mitigate the impact of Spirit Airlines' exit from the market, providing travelers with continued connectivity and options across various key regions.
