Aviation industry developments in early 2026 include significant airline transactions, fleet support agreements, new route launches, and aircraft modernization efforts. Dublin-based ASL Aviation has finalized the sale of its stake in the South African low-cost carrier FlySafair to Harith General Partners, pending regulatory approval. FlySafair has established itself as South Africa’s leading domestic airline, operating a fleet of 39 Boeing 737 aircraft and capturing a 67% share of the local market.

In Ireland, Ryanair has signed a long-term services agreement with CFM International to support its extensive fleet of approximately 2,000 engines, including CFM56 and LEAP models. This partnership will extend support until the airline completes the establishment of new engine maintenance facilities in Europe by 2029, reflecting Ryanair’s ongoing fleet optimization strategies.

Route and Market Expansion

Air Astana announced scheduled twice-weekly flights from Astana to Guangzhou, China, using Airbus A321LR aircraft, effective June 2026. This new route aims to deepen Kazakhstan-China relations and improve business and tourism connectivity. Additionally, AirAsia X announced Bahrain as its Middle East hub, part of its strategic expansion to connect Asia with Europe and Australia, following an MoU with Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications.

Regional airline Originair launched a direct route from Christchurch to Nelson, operating twice weekly with British Aerospace Jetstream 32 aircraft from 13 February 2026. The service offers a short, convenient connection between the South Island cities, supplementing existing services from Air New Zealand.

Aircraft Modernizations and Upgrades

Emirates is advancing its cabin retrofit program, upgrading its high-density Airbus A380s to include a three-class configuration with Premium Economy, Business, and Economy classes. The first aircraft will operate between Dubai and Amman starting mid-April 2026, with plans to retrofit all 15 of its A380s by later this year. The airline also plans upgrades on flights to Ho Chi Minh City and Hong Kong, transitioning to upgraded Boeing 777-200LR and A380 aircraft respectively, with enhanced Premium Economy offerings.

Saudi Arabian regulator GACA has authorized AirX Charter to conduct domestic on-demand private jet operations within the Kingdom, supporting Saudi Arabia’s push to develop its aviation sector under the National Transport and Logistics Strategy by 2030.
