China Eastern Airlines has launched a record-breaking flight route that connects Shanghai, Auckland, and Buenos Aires. This route is now recognized as the world's longest scheduled one-stop passenger service, covering nearly 20,000 kilometers. The inaugural flight took place on December 4, 2025, and is operated twice weekly, providing a critical new link between Asia, Oceania, and South America.
The flight departs from Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG), makes a technical stop in Auckland (AKL) for refueling and crew changes, then continues directly to Buenos Aires (EZE). Despite the stop, it maintains a continuous flight number, classifying it as a 'direct' service. This development enhances regional connectivity and supports trade by enabling faster movement of goods such as Argentine beef, wine, and Chinese electronics.
Trade and Travel Impacts
The route re-establishes the Auckland-Buenos Aires connection, which was previously discontinued, and is the only direct flight linking China and Argentina via a single aircraft. It grants China Eastern Airlines Fifth Freedom Rights for this segment, allowing it to carry passengers and cargo between Auckland and Buenos Aires. Travelers benefit from shortened journey times and simplified transit procedures, especially with New Zealand's transit visa policy easing.
This pioneering route is also expected to bolster regional economies and enhance competitiveness in air trade, fostering closer ties between China, New Zealand, and Argentina. Overall, this achievement signifies a major milestone in international aviation and global commerce, promoting economic integration across multiple continents.
