Emirates has swapped the Airbus A380 for Boeing 777s on its Dubai services to Houston George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and Washington Dulles (IAD), according to Simple Flying. The change, reported in October 2026, means passengers on those routes lose the superjumbo's showers and larger premium cabins. Simple Flying says the changes appear to be permanent, though Emirates has not yet commented.
Simple Flying, citing Aeroroutes data, says the Houston route has operated with the Boeing 777-200LR since 25 August, replacing a daily A380. Washington Dulles is moving to the 777-300ER. The same data lists a Dubai to Boston switch from the A380 to the 777-300ER from 15 September, with frequency cut from seven to six weekly.
Other US routes saw non-A380 changes. Simple Flying lists Miami-Bogotá, Orlando and Seattle schedule or frequency adjustments from 1 September, with further changes after 25 October still pending. Orlando, for example, was listed as dropping from seven to four weekly flights with the 777-200LR.
The article points to several pressures. It says 27 of Emirates' 116 A380s are grounded, partly because of the ongoing war in the Middle East, which it says continues to soften demand for flights into the region. Emirates is also retrofitting its A380 fleet, including its 15 high-capacity A380s, which have no first class and seat 615 passengers.
The A380 reshuffle goes beyond the US. Simple Flying, citing MiG Flug, says 12 non-US routes were affected in September, including Singapore, Sydney, Munich and Zurich. Some replacements are temporary and others have no set end date. On Perth, the A350-900 fills in. It adds, citing Deep Arrival, that Emirates removed 286 European A380 flights in each direction during June.
Simple Flying compares the move with Dallas/Fort Worth in 2016, when Emirates replaced the A380 with 777s after flying it there from October 2014 to February 2016. It says the 489-seat aircraft were often only half full, with competition from Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways. Emirates had said the A380 would return that September, but it did not, and the route has largely stayed without it. Emirates said at the time, according to Star Alliance, the decision was part of a routine operational review. Simple Flying has asked Emirates whether 2016 served as a blueprint.
It is not yet known whether Emirates will ever return the A380 to these routes, or what compensation, if any, affected passengers will be offered.
