Ethiopian Airlines has announced plans to establish non-stop flights to Australia’s major cities, including Perth, Sydney, and Melbourne, starting in 2028. This strategic move aims to connect Africa directly with Australia, utilizing the airline’s new long-range aircraft, specifically the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The airline’s expansion reflects its goal to strengthen international ties and increase passenger convenience on long-haul routes.
With a robust fleet and extensive network, Ethiopian Airlines currently serves over 145 destinations worldwide. The addition of nine Boeing 787-9s and six Airbus A350-900s will enhance its capacity for non-stop flights, allowing direct access from Addis Ababa to Australian cities. This initiative aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ broader plan to modernize its fleet and offer premium services, including upgraded business class seats across its aircraft family.
As a member of Star Alliance, Ethiopian Airlines will leverage its extensive global connectivity to facilitate easy travel connections beyond Australia, spanning Africa, Europe, and Asia. The airline’s expansion into the Australian market signifies its ambition to elevate its international presence and serve as a key link between Africa and Oceania. The move is also expected to boost tourism and business exchanges, establishing a new corridor for African-Australian engagement.
In addition to route expansion, Ethiopian Airlines is investing heavily in upgrading its passenger experience, introducing innovative business class suites such as Collins Aerospace Elevation seats on Airbus A350s and the Elevate Ascent model on Boeing 787-9s. These advancements are designed to cater to the increasing demand for luxury and comfort on long-distance flights.
Overall, Ethiopian Airlines’ entry into the Australian market positions it as a major international carrier, capable of competing with established long-haul airlines. By modernizing its fleet and expanding its network, it aims to provide seamless, high-quality service for travelers seeking direct connectivity between Ethiopia and Australia, fostering economic growth and tourism development between the two regions.
