Etihad Airways has announced a significant expansion of its mainland China network, adding five new routes from Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport to major Chinese cities, including Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen. This expansion will enhance the airline's connectivity to China, complementing its existing services to Beijing Daxing International Airport.
commencement of daily flights to Shanghai is scheduled for October 1, 2026. Subsequently, service to Guangzhou will start on March 4, 2027, with flights to Hangzhou, Chengdu, and Shenzhen following in early March, increasing the weekly flights to the region from six to thirty-five. All routes will be operated by Boeing 787-9 aircraft, configured with 28 business and 262 economy seats.
Strategic Partnership and Future Outlook
The expansion leverages Etihad’s joint venture with China Eastern Airlines, which facilitates coordinated operations across multiple Chinese cities. This strategic partnership supports the growing importance of the UAE–China corridor for trade, tourism, and investment, positioning Abu Dhabi as a key gateway linking China to other international markets.
"This increase in capacity reflects the growing strategic importance of the UAE–China corridor,” said a spokesperson for Etihad. “It will strengthen the connectivity between the two nations and support our expansion plans in the region."
