The recent escalation of conflict in the Middle East has underscored the vital role that Gulf airlines play in global connectivity, particularly for the markets of Australia and India. Since late February 2026, disruptions caused by the conflict have led to the suspension of most scheduled flights operated by major Gulf carriers from their home bases, impacting international travel flows.
This disruption has significant implications for the aviation industry, notably in the Asia Pacific region, where Australia and India rely heavily on Middle Eastern hubs for connecting flights. Central to this network are airlines based in the Gulf, with Dubai serving as a primary interchange point. These hubs facilitate not only passenger travel but also the movement of Indian workers and demand from other Middle Eastern markets.
Connectivity and Regional Impact
In Australia, Gulf hubs enable seamless links to Europe and other continents, supporting international business and tourism. Similarly, in India, these hubs provide essential transit options, especially as many Indian expatriates and workers in the Middle East depend on these routes for their global travel. The suspension of Gulf airline flights due to the conflict raises concerns over the resilience of this interconnected network and the broader implications for regional and global mobility.
Experts suggest that airlines and policymakers will need to adapt quickly to mitigate these disruptions and explore alternative routing options. The ongoing conflict highlights the strategic importance of Gulf carriers and the need for diverse connectivity options in an increasingly volatile geopolitical environment.
