Indian airline IndiGo experienced significant operational disruptions following a technical glitch at Indira Gandhi International Airport on December 4, 2025. The incident caused delays and cancellations of over 1,000 flights across various cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, leading to chaos at airports and frustration among stranded passengers.

The disruption coincided with new regulatory measures introduced by Indian authorities to enhance airline safety. These measures included stricter pilot duty and rest regulations, which required airlines such as IndiGo to adapt quickly. IndiGo admitted to underestimating the impact of these new regulations, which had been scheduled to be implemented by November 1, but were temporarily exempted for the carrier by authorities to manage the crisis.

In response, IndiGo's CEO Pieter Elbers issued a public apology, acknowledging the loss of customer trust and outlining plans to restore full operations by mid-December. The airline offered waivers for cancellations and bookings between December 5 and 15, while arranging ground transportation and hotel accommodations for affected passengers. Despite the challenges, other Indian carriers like Air India and Akasa have not faced similar flight cancellations, as they were not subject to the same regulatory exemptions.

The incident has also raised political and public concern, with opposition parties calling for discussion in Parliament about the regulatory measures and their implementation. The Indian civil aviation authority has put some rules on hold for IndiGo until February 10, including the limit on nighttime landings, to assist the airline during the crisis. Looking ahead, the airline expects a gradual return to normalcy over the coming days.
