Italy will experience significant disruptions in air travel as aviation unions have rescheduled a nationwide strike for 26 February 2026. The strike, involving pilots, cabin crew, ground staff, and air traffic controllers, is likely to cause widespread delays and cancellations at major airports including Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, Rome Fiumicino, Venice Marco Polo, and Verona Catullo. This action, confirmed on 19 February by AirHelp, follows a postponement from 16 February to avoid coinciding with the Winter Olympics.
The strike comes amid accusations from union representatives of staff shortages and wage issues, with airlines already planning preventive cancellations. Passengers are advised to allow extra time for check-in and security procedures. Under EU law, travelers affected by cancellations under these circumstances may be entitled to compensation, if applicable.
Travelers are encouraged to plan alternative routes through neighboring countries such as Switzerland, Austria, or France, or to utilize rail options on affected corridors, noting that a separate rail strike by Trenitalia is also anticipated starting 27 February. Hotels in major hubs are reporting higher occupancy, indicating a potential surge in last-minute accommodations. Experts suggest preparing contingency plans, including flexible tickets and remote meetings, to mitigate the impact of the strike.
