Malaysia Aviation Group's newly appointed CEO, Nasaruddin A Bakar, has been navigating the airline through significant operational and financial challenges since taking charge just a month ago. Despite the ongoing geopolitical tensions, including the Iran conflict and Middle East crisis, Nasaruddin has prioritized stabilizing the group's financial performance and maintaining operational stability.
In an interview, he explained that his initial 100-day plan focused on clarity, leadership, and trust-building within the organization. However, the conflict prompted a swift reorientation toward addressing immediate concerns like safety, security, and operational contingency measures. Nasaruddin highlighted that he had engaged with over 4,000 staff members during his first month, emphasizing the importance of internal communication and morale.
Financial and Strategic Outlook
The group reported a 6% increase in revenue for 2025, reaching MYR14.6 billion, with net profits more than doubling year on year to MYR137 million. Despite a 67% decline in operating profit, the company remains on solid financial footing, with plans to acquire ten new aircraft by year's end and continued expansion, including reinstating flights to Japanese cities such as Fukuoka after 20 years.

Nasaruddin underscored the importance of reviewing and adjusting strategies in response to evolving circumstances, including high fuel prices and security threats. He stated that the airline closely monitors intelligence updates every six hours to ensure safety and operational continuity. His extensive background at Malaysia Airlines, from pilot to COO and now CEO, provides him with a comprehensive industry perspective, especially during these turbulent times.
He also reflected on the airline's resilience, recounting past crises from the fuel shortages of the 1970s to the tragedies of 2014 and 2015. Throughout, he has found reassurance in the support of his team of over 14,000 staff members, which he considers vital to overcoming current difficulties and recognizing future opportunities.
