September 22, 2026 — Air travelers across the United States faced significant disruptions yesterday, Monday, September 21, following an equipment outage that halted operations at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) in Pennsylvania. The incident led to the cancellation of more than 800 flights nationwide and delayed over 5,000 others, according to reports.
The primary cause of the widespread issue was identified as a circuit malfunction at a Philadelphia air traffic control facility on Monday morning, as stated by FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford. The subsequent activation of a backup system revealed a critical failure: the backup line in New Jersey had been severed. This dual failure severely compromised air traffic control capabilities in the region.
To facilitate repairs, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) briefly closed the airspace over the Northeast for at least 30 minutes. Ground stops were expanded to include New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA) as part of the immediate response. While JFK and LaGuardia's airspace subsequently reopened, efforts to replace the faulty circuit in Philadelphia proved unsuccessful in initial attempts, leaving operations at Philadelphia and Newark airports suspended indefinitely.
The ripple effect of the outage was substantial, impacting air travel far beyond the immediate Northeast corridor. Flights were diverted, canceled, and delayed across the country. United Airlines, which maintains a significant hub at Newark Airport, announced Monday afternoon that it was canceling all remaining domestic mainline and United Express flights to and from Newark for the day. The airline stated it would prioritize international departures.
As of early Tuesday, the situation at Philadelphia and Newark airports remains unresolved, with no estimated time for the resumption of full service. The FAA and relevant authorities are continuing to work on rectifying the equipment issues. Travelers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates on flight status and potential schedule changes. The incident underscores the critical importance of robust and redundant infrastructure in maintaining the continuity of air travel operations.
