SMBC Aviation Capital, alongside international investment firms Apollo and Brookfield, has completed the acquisition of US-based aircraft leasing company Air Lease Corporation. The deal, valued at $7.4 billion, was finalized on April 9, 2026, after securing all necessary regulatory approvals.
The transaction involves a significant cash payout of $65 per share to Air Lease shareholders, and Sumisho Air Lease Corporation, the new entity, will also assume the firm's existing debt, bringing the total transaction value to about $28.2 billion. The acquisition marks a strategic move to strengthen SMBC Aviation's position in the global aircraft leasing industry.
CEO Noriyuki Hiruta stated that the company aims to leverage its modern fleet and financial strength to meet the evolving needs of airlines and investors worldwide. The ownership stakes include 37.51% held by Sumitomo Corporation, 24.99% by SMBC, and 18.75% each by Apollo and Brookfield. The combined effort is expected to boost investments in environmentally friendly aircraft and expand financing capabilities through global markets.
This acquisition consolidates the companies’ market presence and demonstrates strong investor confidence in their growth prospects, creating a platform for long-term value creation in the aircraft leasing sector.
