Aircraft leasing company Air Lease has been acquired by a consortium comprising SMBC Aviation Capital, Sumitomo, Apollo-managed funds, and Brookfield in a transaction valued at approximately $7.4 billion. This move has resulted in the rebranding of the company as Sumisho Air Lease, with the new owners emphasizing improvements in financial stability and operational expertise.
The deal, announced in September and including debt obligations, consolidates the orderbook of Air Lease into SMBC Aviation Capital, which now manages around 420 aircraft with Airbus and Boeing. The acquisition aims to create a competitive, well-capitalized leasing platform capable of delivering innovative solutions to airline partners worldwide.
Strategic and Industry Impacts
Peter Barrett, CEO of SMBC Aviation Capital, highlighted that the transaction enhances the company's market position by combining modern, high-quality fleets with industry-leading capabilities. The transfer of Air Lease’s commitments signifies a significant step in consolidating aircraft leasing operations across the global aviation sector.
The collaboration is expected to strengthen relationships with airline customers and support sustainable growth within the industry, with SMBC Aviation Capital serving as the primary servicer for the combined portfolios.
